Dentures; Things You Need to Know

Dentures are removable replacements of missing teeth used by dental patients who prefer non-surgical options to restore their oral functionality and natural-like smiling appearance. Based on the different conditions of patients with teeth loss – Whether they are missing some or all teeth -, we provide all types of denture sets, partial dentures, complete dentures, immediate dentures, and also implant-supported dentures.

What is Denture?

Dentures are a set of artificial teeth and gum that are custom-made by experienced dentures dentists and formed in patients’ mouths to replace lost or removed teeth. Porcelain or acrylic – a transparent plastic material – is commonly used to create the denture set, as well as hard resin in today’s modern dental technology. There are two types of dentures available – partial and complete dentures.

→ Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are for dental patients missing more than one or a few teeth. Partial dentures require one or more teeth to remain in the upper or lower jawbone. Partial dentures are easily removable and not just fill the gap of the teeth lost but actively prevent the remaining teeth from changing positions.

→ Full Dentures

Complete dentures are the replacement for all the missing teeth in one or both jaws. They are designed to replace the entire section. There are two sets used in full-mouth dentures, the denture base which acts as the foundation for the other set; the artificial teeth. Complete dentures are removable and need denture adhesives to keep them in place.

At BC Dental Health, our expert dentists are highly skilled and trained to create custom dentures following the best dental practices. Feel free to request an appointment!

What are Immediate Dentures?

Immediate dentures, also called temporary dentures, are used by patients right after tooth extraction. Since the permanent dentures procedure takes several months to fabricate the custom-fit dentures set for a patient, many people prefer to have immediate dentures that can be made on the same day. They also protect gums and prevent gum bleeding.

Implant-Supported Dentures:

The implant-supported dentures are nearly the same as common and traditional dentures. The main difference is, Instead of placing the set on the gum in traditional dentures, an implant-supported denture is directly attached to the patient’s jawbones using dental implants. Although implant-supported dentures are expensive compared to others, they have better functionality, durability, and a fully natural appearance. They can be both removable and non-removable.

Fixed Dentures:

Fixed dentures are non-removable custom-made teeth designed to place on artificial gum tissues. Fixed dentures are more secure because they are attached to your jawbones or gum lines through implant technology. Fixed dentures or Permanent dentures are highly stable and long-lasting and can be used for up to 10 years. Recommended period to change the fixed dentures is 5 to 10 years.

Why Do You Need Dentures?

While you are missing one or more teeth in one or both jaws, and you are thinking of a non-surgical and less expensive treatment than dental implant treatment, partial dentures are your option. When there are no teeth or the remaining ones are not enough to hold the partial dentures set, a full mouth also called complete dentures is needed. Dentures are less expensive, surgery-free, and work well to restore functionality and appearance of teeth as well.

Dentures; Process & Procedure

Dentures have several types based on the patient’s requirements and preferences. The detailed process for each is different from the other one. But the common process for each denture treatment will contain these three steps.

  1. Proper Examination:

Dentists will go with the dental examination as the first step in the denture process. They will examine your teeth and oral health states, they will search for any sign of infections, tooth decay, or any prior dental work that can create difficulties in the process. They also find out if any tooth remains to extract where the dentures are required to place.

2. The Making of Dentures:

After they take impressions of your mouth and missing teeth areas, Dentists will create the custom dentures in the lab followed by the previous accurate measurements and specifications to make the set completely fit with the patient’s mouth.

3. Fitting the Dentures:

After your dentures are made, they will start the process of placing them in your mouth. Dentures are expected to fit in the mouth without having pains or issues. They will make adjustments – If necessary – to fix and make them completely comfortable to wear, use, and remove.

Note: It can take some time to have your set of dentures fully adapted to your mouth. But there will be no pains or issues in this period before it becomes natural to you for regular use.
